Natural Gas Price Hike
The rise in natural gas rates in Colombia is driven primarily by resource scarcity and a supply-demand imbalance, in a market that no longer has enough domestic production to meet consumption needs.
This situation is the result of public policy decisions that have discouraged investment in exploration and production, along with legal uncertainty, lack of regulatory continuity, and delays in key decisions needed to ensure adequate supply.
In this context, when local gas falls short, retailers must turn to imported gas — which is more expensive — and its cost is passed directly on to the final rates paid by consumers.
As a result, the increase in rates is not only permitted within the regulatory framework, but also reflects current market conditions and the lack of timely structural measures to secure the country's energy self-sufficiency.
