The Sense of Energy Scarcity in Colombia
Colombia is facing a growing energy scarcity scenario marked by delays in key gas projects, judicial and environmental rulings that suspend strategic explorations, and adverse climate conditions affecting electricity generation.
Cases such as the suspension of the Uchuva 2 well and the delay of projects like Komodo-1, combined with low incorporation of new reserves and lack of infrastructure, have intensified uncertainty over the country's energy self-sufficiency.
Adding to this is the pressure on the electrical system from water scarcity and the limited addition of new generation capacity, which has even forced gas supply restrictions in certain segments to prioritize power generation.
The problem goes beyond the technical: the lack of clear regulatory signals and timely institutional decisions is undermining the country's ability to guarantee the supply of essential services.
If urgent measures are not taken, the country could face not only a significant increase in prices, but a critical situation in which it becomes necessary to prioritize access to public services such as gas, electricity, and water — creating a complex tension between fundamental rights and affecting overall welfare and the economy.
