Ecopetrol in, foreign firms out: Behind Colombia's renewables M&A surge
Colombia’s renewable energy sector is experiencing a wave of M&A activity, with companies like Ecopetrol and Celsia acquiring wind and solar assets, while some international players are exiting due to development challenges.
For buyers, these transactions support decarbonization goals and allow expansion through more advanced projects, avoiding early-stage development risks. For sellers, prolonged delays, particularly in wind projects in La Guajira, along with regulatory, social, and infrastructure challenges have driven decisions to divest.
Rather than signaling full confidence, this trend reflects a market adapting to uncertainty. Key risks remain, including regulatory instability, environmental permitting, community consultations, and limited transmission capacity.
While M&A activity is expected to continue, it underscores a broader reality: Colombia must address structural and institutional barriers to unlock the full potential of its renewable energy sector and ensure long-term energy reliability.
